Getting Here

You won’t need a rental car in Alta – everything you need is right here!
Due to high snowfall amounts and limited public parking, a car is not recommended in Alta.

Insider tip: The “greatest snow on Earth” is more fun to ski in than to drive or manage a vehicle in. We recommend leaving your vehicle down-canyon and using a professional shuttle service for transportation to/from Alta.

Alta Lodge is only 32 miles from the Salt Lake City International Airport, about 45 to 60 minutes via airport shuttle. Shuttle service is also available from the Salt Lake City Amtrak station.

Alta Shuttle Reservations
We encourage our guests to use Alta Shuttle for door to door transportation to/from Alta Lodge. From tracking your arrival, road conditions and restrictions, the experienced team at Alta Shuttle will provide you comfortable, safe and reliable transportation.

Driving to Alta
State law requires that all vehicles traveling in Little Cottonwood Canyon be equipped with proper tires or have traction devices such as chains installed when the traction law is in effect. 2WD Vehicles Must have 3PMSF rated tires on all wheels or chains on all drive wheels. 4WD + AWD Vehicles Must have 3PMSF or M+S rated tires or chains on all wheels.

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) or law enforcement agencies such as the Unified Police Department determine when road conditions require the use of these devices. Travelers are notified via road signs, message boards, the UDOT traffic app, and UDOT Cottonwood Canyons social media.

Overnight parking
Due to limited parking (and the potential of “digging out” after a storm), consider leaving your vehicle down-canyon and taking the shuttle up to Alta. Transportation can be arranged with Alta Shuttle for pick up at the airport or alternate Salt Lake City valley locations where you can safely leave your vehicle overnight.

If you bring a vehicle to Alta, please note that overnight parking is in uncovered areas, and parking regulations are strictly enforced.

Guests of Alta Lodge with a confirmed reservation do not need to purchase parking in advance through Alta Ski Area. Overnight parking permits are available for our Lodge guests ($25 per night). Please inquire at the Front Desk upon check-in for assistance with overnight parking during your stay.
